Michael Whatley Supports Raising Health Care Costs While He Profits From His Big Pharma Stock

As North Carolina faces one of the largest drops in ACA enrollment in the nation, here’s a reminder that DC insider Michael Whatley cheered on Washington Republicans as they refused to extend the ACA tax credits that kept monthly premiums low. Now, premiums have doubled for nearly a million North Carolinians:

N&O: “Black Mountain resident and small business owner Madison Maxwell decided this year to forgo health insurance coverage after seeing her premium more than double.”

KFF: “The Tobiassens decided to cancel their insurance when Rebecca saw the cost of their monthly premiums would jump from $130 to more than $550. ‘It makes no sense,’ she said. ‘It’s not worth it anymore.’”

Carolina Public Press: “The price hike left many healthy people with marketplace plans wondering whether it was even worth it to keep their coverage. Enrollment in marketplace plans has decreased significantly so in 2026, with North Carolina’s drop-off the steepest of any U.S. state.”

As Whatley supports making monthly premiums skyrocket, he has also helped pass legislation that raises prescription drug costs for seniors while benefiting his Big Pharma stocks:

Charlotte Observer: “Drug companies profited from the Big Beautiful Bill. So did Michael Whatley”
