New Hanover County Mental Health Fellows Program application portal now open
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Graduate-level students working towards becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner or mental health provider while attending North Carolina-accredited universities or colleges are encouraged to apply for the next installment of New Hanover County’s Mental Health Fellows Program. Now in its fourth year, this program provides financial assistance to those pursuing these careers if they willing to serve the New Hanover County community following their graduation.
Funded by the county’s $50 million Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Fund and funds from the national opioid settlement, this program continues to strengthen the capacity of mental health and substance use disorder service providers in New Hanover County. Applications are open through November 30, 2026.
“This program supports the academic endeavors of young people throughout our state while also building a network of well-trained mental health professionals here in our community,” said Chief Civic Engagement Officer Linda Thompson. “We are grateful for the partnership of our in-state institutions and thankful for the opportunity to provide students with financial assistance on their journey while also helping people in New Hanover County who are facing mental health and substance use disorders.”
If chosen for the fellows program, students who are currently enrolled in a psychiatric nurse practitioner program are eligible for $4,500 per semester, with a maximum award of $36,000. Students in the mental health provider Fellows Program can receive $3,500 per semester, with a maximum award of $14,000.
The online application portal is open through November 30, 2026. If selected, individuals will be notified in mid-December with initial funds being distributed in January 2027. Funding is renewable each semester with proof of satisfactory academic performance.
To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled and in good standing with a North Carolina-accredited program at their respective educational institution.
As part of the program, recipients commit to serving underserved populations in New Hanover County following graduation and licensure. Psychiatric nurse practitioners must work for a minimum of three years in the county, while mental health providers are required to serve for at least two years.
